Voltavate has been awarded $3.55 million in grant funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to accelerate the development of its innovative battery manufacturing approach and transition from laboratory research to pilot-scale production.
The Australian government is giving money to ARENA’s Advancing Renewables Program. This money will help build pilot-scale factories and test Voltavate’s separator technology in real battery cells to make sure it works.
Focus on In-House Separator Production
A key part of Voltavate’s approach is letting battery makers make separators themselves, which means they don’t have to rely on outside suppliers as much. The supply chains for separators are very concentrated right now, which makes it hard for manufacturers to be flexible and scale up production.
Voltavate’s platform is designed as a drop-in solution that can be integrated directly into existing battery production lines. This allows manufacturers to produce their own separators similar to electrode manufacturing while tailoring properties to specific cell designs.
Improving Performance and Scalability
The company’s separator technology aims to enhance key battery performance parameters, including:
- Improved energy density
- Extended battery lifespan
- Greater manufacturing efficiency
By enabling in-house production, the platform also supports reduced production waste and improved scalability, addressing growing global demand for batteries.
Pilot-Scale Manufacturing and Testing
The project will focus on scaling Voltavate’s technology from lab-scale development to pilot-scale production. This includes:
- Integrating separator materials into battery cells
- Conducting independent performance and safety testing
- Generating validated prototype cells for customer evaluation
These steps are expected to support Voltavate’s pathway toward commercial deployment.
Leadership Perspective
Amir Hooshang Taheri, CEO and Co-founder of Voltavate, stated that the project represents a key milestone in transitioning the company’s technology into real manufacturing environments. He emphasized the company’s focus on improving production processes, reducing waste, and giving manufacturers greater control over critical battery components.
Darren Miller, CEO of ARENA, highlighted the project’s role in strengthening Australia’s position in the global battery value chain. He noted that supporting advanced manufacturing capabilities is essential for enabling scalable and resilient clean energy technologies.
Strengthening Battery Manufacturing Ecosystem
As demand for batteries around the world keeps going up, Voltavate is positioning itself as a key player in the next generation of manufacturing. The company wants to help its partners in the battery industry make more batteries while keeping performance and cost-effectiveness by making production more efficient and less dependent on the supply chain.
