World EV Day 2025: Voices from the Frontlines of Electric Mobility

The world is moving faster than ever toward electrification, and India is emerging as one of the biggest players in this transformative journey. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the global electric vehicle fleet surpassed 45 million units in 2024, a dramatic rise from just 10 million in 2020. India, too, is seeing a sharp upward curve—with the domestic EV market projected to reach USD 113.99 billion by 2029, growing at a CAGR of 66.5%. This growth is powered not only by rising consumer demand and government policies but also by strong investments in R&D, charging infrastructure, and localized manufacturing.

World EV Day, celebrated every year on September 9, is more than just a symbolic occasion. It represents a collective movement—bringing together policymakers, industry leaders, and innovators to reaffirm their commitment to cleaner, greener mobility. This year’s theme, “The Better Manifesto”, is a call to action for all stakeholders to move beyond intent and translate vision into measurable impact.

India is uniquely positioned in this global shift. With government initiatives such as PM E-DRIVE, FAME incentives, and state-level EV adoption policies, the country is paving the way for electrification across two-wheelers, buses, passenger cars, and commercial fleets. Moreover, the last-mile delivery sector alone is expected to generate over 10 billion trips annually by FY2030, highlighting the enormous scope for electric two- and three-wheelers.

As the EV ecosystem matures, challenges remain—scaling domestic supply chains, building giga-factories, strengthening charging infrastructure, and ensuring affordability. But industry leaders are confident: India’s EV future is not only achievable but inevitable.

Let’s hear what the industry giants have to say on this World EV Day 2025:

Mr. Nishant Arya, Vice Chairman & MD, JBM Group

“On this World EV Day, we are reminded that electric mobility is no longer a niche. Moreover, the transition to electric mobility is not just about technology, it is about redefining the future of urban transport, thereby, transforming people’s lives.

At JBM EV, we envisioned this transition towards clean mobility a decade back. Today, we are proud to be at the forefront of this movement. Our new age electric buses are running and getting deployed globally across India, Europe, APAC and MEA regions having made dominating contribution to the environment.

Our shared vision is clear, making India a global hub for sustainable mobility. This means building strong domestic supply chains for batteries and components, enabling giga-scale manufacturing, driving skill development and ensuring policy frameworks that encourage innovation and investment. This transformation is not just an environmental imperative, it is a trillion-dollar economic opportunity.

The road ahead is electric and India is driving this transformation with agility and intent.”

Mr. Anish Raghunandan, President & Client Partner – TML Group, Tata Technologies

“The global shift to electric mobility is not just an industry trend, but it is a societal imperative. As nations pursue a greener future and consumers demand sustainable choices, the EV industry stands at a decisive crossroads—where innovation must meet purpose. At Tata Technologies, we’re accelerating this transformation through our deep domain expertise, digital engineering capabilities, and global partnerships with leading OEMs. Our focus goes beyond the vehicle; we’re reimagining the entire value chain, from responsible sourcing to digital compliance and sustainable manufacturing.

The theme for this World EV Day, The Better Manifesto, is a timely call to action. It urges all of us to move from intent to impact—to engineer solutions that are not only better for businesses but better for people and the planet too. Together, we can make electric mobility not just a technological shift, but a symbol of positive change for generations to come.”

Mr. Balbir Singh Dhillon, Head of Audi India

“Electric mobility in India has witnessed steady demand and we believe the next decade will be transformative for the industry as well as for customers. At Audi India, our e-tron range, comprising four electric cars, has been embraced by progressive customers who are looking for sustainable yet uncompromising luxury. To make this transition seamless, our ‘Charge my Audi’ initiative gives access to over 6,500 charging points across the country, offering customers the confidence and convenience they need. We see this as just the beginning. With the right infrastructure, innovation and policy support, India has the potential to emerge as one of the most significant EV markets in the world and we are prepared to contribute to this journey.”

Mr. Tushar Choudhary, Founder & CEO, Motovolt Mobility

“The need for affordable and reliable passenger and goods mobility is growing as traffic congestion, air pollution, and the pursuit of a decarbonised society intensify. A large portion of this demand comes from the last-mile delivery space, which is expected to reach around 10 billion by FY30. Government initiatives like the PM E-DRIVE scheme are reducing reliance on fossil fuels and highlighting the need for robust charging infrastructure. We believe battery-swapping and electric 2W Mobility-as-a-Service (E2W-MaaS) will provide cost savings, faster turnaround for deliveries, and operational flexibility. These solutions not only empower individual gig workers but also benefit the booming e-commerce industry, supporting the country’s broader economic goals.”

Anupam Kumar, Co-Founder and CEO, MiniMines

“Batteries are at the core of India’s electric mobility shift, and securing them is key to scaling EV adoption. India’s demand for lithium-ion batteries is projected to reach 115 GWh by 2030, which will also generate around 70,000 metric tonnes of battery waste annually. At the same time, the country spends close to $2.5 billion each year on imports of lithium and cobalt, underscoring the need for domestic recovery of critical minerals.

At MiniMines, we have built a facility with 3,000 MTPA processing capacity dedicated to minimizing the environmental impact of battery waste while maximizing the recovery of valuable materials through advanced recycling technologies. As South India’s first CPCB-certified R4 battery recycling company specializing in extracting and refining critical metals, we are working to create a circular battery ecosystem that strengthens domestic supply chains and supports India’s clean energy transition.”

World EV Day 2025 underscores one undeniable reality—India is at the heart of the electric mobility revolution. From giga-scale manufacturing to battery-swapping ecosystems and digital-first engineering solutions, the industry is evolving at breakneck speed. The combined vision of established conglomerates and agile startups is shaping not just vehicles, but the future of sustainable living.

As the quotes from industry leaders reveal, the transition to electric mobility is not only about decarbonization—it is about creating a cleaner, smarter, and more equitable tomorrow. The road ahead is electric, and India is steering with both agility and intent.
