ZincFive Unveils Next-Generation BMS

ZincFive, a leading provider of nickel-zinc battery-based solutions for high-performance power applications, has launched the ZincFive BMS, a next-generation battery management system specifically engineered for its NiZn battery chemistry. Designed and assembled in the United States, the new system is aimed at delivering advanced monitoring and management capabilities tailored to nickel-zinc energy storage applications.

The ZincFive BMS ships standard with every ZincFive BC Series UPS Battery Cabinets, serving as the primary interface for data center operators, UPS OEM partners, and system integrators to monitor and manage ZincFive’s technology.

Built on years of experience managing NiZn in real-world data center environments, ZincFive engineered the BMS around the unique characteristics of its NiZn chemistry, rather than adapting a platform designed for lithium-ion or lead-acid batteries. The result is a streamlined two-tier hardware architecture, consisting of the ZincFive Controller and ZincFive Tray Monitor, that delivers high-resolution telemetry across the entire battery cabinet while simplifying system design.

The streamlined architecture simplifies cabinet wiring, eliminates the need for third-party unmanaged network switches, and reduces installation time, infrastructure complexity, and hardware costs. Cabinets daisy-chain via dual Ethernet ports, while the Tray Monitor measures individual battery voltage and temperature via isoSPI protocol, eliminating an additional data aggregation layer and simplifying integration with the data center’s building management system.

The ZincFive BMS is assembled in the U.S., with hardware, software and firmware developed entirely at ZincFive’s headquarters in the U.S. This integrated approach gives ZincFive greater control over the platform, from deployment and upgrades to ongoing innovation and customer-driven enhancements.

As AI workloads continue to reshape data center power requirements, AI pulse intelligence is enabled through the ZincFive BMS in BC 2 AI UPS Battery Cabinets, allowing the system to respond to the high-frequency power pulses associated with AI training and inference workloads. The ZincFive BMS also incorporates advanced cybersecurity into battery management. Encryption, authentication, hardened communications, and comprehensive access controls are built in from the ground up, helping meet increasingly stringent operational technology (OT) security requirements while providing audit-ready visibility.

A redesigned interface gives operators fleet-wide visibility and control, with access to key system attributes such as state of charge and voltage, time-series data, advanced alarms and alerts, and a comprehensive user and permissions hierarchy for multi-site deployments. Operators can also remotely configure systems and deploy firmware updates. With the hardware, software, and firmware designed and supported in-house by ZincFive, improvements and customer-requested enhancements can be delivered directly without reliance on third-party vendors.

“The ZincFive BMS reflects everything we’ve learned from managing and deploying nickel-zinc batteries at scale,” said Tod Higinbotham, CEO of ZincFive. “By bringing development in-house and assembling the BMS in the U.S., we have greater control over the platform and how it evolves. Purpose-built for our battery chemistry, it delivers greater visibility, stronger cybersecurity, and a simpler deployment experience, while giving us the ability to continuously evolve the platform alongside our customers’ needs. As AI reshapes data center power requirements, this level of intelligence and control becomes increasingly critical.”

With more than 2 gigawatts of NiZn power delivered or contracted globally, ZincFive brings years of real-world deployment experience and engineering expertise to the ZincFive BMS. Purpose-built for ZincFive NiZn and standard with every ZincFive BC Series UPS Battery Cabinets, the BMS strengthens a technology platform designed to deliver high-performance immediate power with superior safety and sustainability for mission-critical infrastructure worldwide.

ZincFive is the leader in immediate power solutions for mission-critical infrastructure based on nickel-zinc battery technology. The company’s extensively patented nickel-zinc technology delivers high-power, safe, reliable, and sustainable energy storage solutions engineered for the demands of modern data centers, industrial operations, and AI-era infrastructure. ZincFive’s systems harness The Power of Good Chemistry to help customers power what’s next without tradeoffs. Headquartered in Oregon, USA, ZincFive serves customers worldwide.
