Ashok Leyland has inaugurated a state-of-the-art commercial vehicle manufacturing plant in Lucknow on January 9, 2026, marking the company’s entry into Uttar Pradesh’s clean mobility sector. The 70-acre integrated facility, located in the Sarojini Nagar Industrial Area near Lucknow Airport, was inaugurated by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Defence Minister and Lucknow MP Rajnath Singh, and Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. The ceremony was also attended by Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, Cabinet Ministers Suresh Khanna and Nand Gopal Gupta ‘Nandi’, Transport Minister Dayashankar Singh, MLA Rajeshwar Singh, diplomats, industrialists, and representatives from Ashok Leyland’s global dealer and supplier network.
The plant, built under Uttar Pradesh’s FDI and Electric Vehicle policies, focuses primarily on electric vehicle production. Its initial annual production capacity is 2,500 units, set to expand to 5,000 units in phases. The facility manufactures 17–18 seater buses priced around ₹15 lakh, intended for school transport and inter-city connectivity. Equipped with modern technology, automation, and sustainability features, the plant includes rooftop solar panels, LED lighting, battery-operated logistics systems, positive water balance measures, and zero-discharge operations, making it Ashok Leyland’s most advanced manufacturing facility globally.
Dheeraj Hinduja, Chairman of Ashok Leyland, said, “The inauguration of this new plant marks an important chapter for Ashok Leyland in Uttar Pradesh. Our Group remains deeply committed to unlocking opportunities that drive economic growth, create meaningful employment, and advance sustainable mobility.”
Shenu Agarwal, MD & CEO, added, “Uttar Pradesh’s commitment to environmental responsibility, coupled with Ashok Leyland’s Net Zero 2048 ambition, has been a key catalyst for establishing this facility. The plant reflects world-class quality, innovation, and a cleaner, future-ready mobility ecosystem for India.”
CM Yogi Adityanath highlighted that Uttar Pradesh accounted for 19% of India’s EV market in 2024 and currently operates 700 electric buses under FAME I and II schemes. He also announced that the Hinduja Group will partner with the state government to provide annual skill training to 10,000 youth. The facility has generated direct and indirect employment opportunities for thousands, reinforcing Uttar Pradesh’s position as a leader in industrial growth, clean mobility, and sustainable development.
