The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has asked Indian manufacturers of grid-forming (GFM) inverters to submit details of their domestic production capacity, marking an important step toward strengthening grid stability as renewable energy penetration increases across the country.
In an official communication issued by the Energy Storage System (ESS) Division of the Ministry of Power, the CEA highlighted that the rising share of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind makes the deployment of grid-forming inverters essential for maintaining a stable and reliable electricity grid. Unlike conventional grid-following inverters, grid-forming inverters can independently establish voltage and frequency, allowing power systems to operate securely even with high renewable and battery energy storage integration.
The authority stated that it is seeking estimates of India’s manufacturing capacity for grid-forming inverters for future planning, as well as for policy, regulatory, and technical interventions. The move is aimed at assessing domestic supply readiness and supporting informed decision-making as India expands renewable energy capacity and large-scale energy storage deployment.
Manufacturers have been requested to submit their production capacity details in a prescribed format by February 10, 2026, via email to the CEA. In addition to capacity data, the CEA has also sought information on the tentative cost of both grid-forming (GFM) and grid-following (GFL) inverters manufactured in India. The cost details are to cover central and string inverter configurations across a wide range of capacities, including 10 kW, 100 kW, 1 MW, and above.
Grid-forming inverters are increasingly viewed as a critical technology for future power systems, especially in grids with high shares of renewable energy and battery energy storage systems. By enabling voltage and frequency support without relying on an existing grid signal, GFM inverters enhance system resilience and reduce dependence on conventional synchronous generators.
India has set ambitious renewable energy and energy storage targets, and the CEA’s initiative is widely seen as an early policy step toward encouraging domestic manufacturing of advanced inverter technologies. The letter has been issued with the approval of the Chairperson of the CEA and circulated to all grid-forming inverter manufacturers in the country.
The notice has also been published on the official CEA website under the “What’s New” section, confirming it as a primary government source communication.
