DGPC Hands Over 7.83 MWp Rooftop Solar Systems Across 185 Public Infrastructure Sites in Bhutan

Druk Green Power Corporation Limited (DGPC) has formally handed over 7.83 MWp of rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems installed across 185 public infrastructure sites in Bhutan following the completion of Subproject 1 of the Distributed Solar for Public Infrastructure Project (DSPIP).

The handover took place on November 4, 2026, when DGPC’s Solar Project Division under the Projects & Contract Department transferred the recently commissioned rooftop solar installations to its Operation & Maintenance Department. The installations cover public infrastructure under Thimphu Thromde and DGPC facilities at the Chhukha and Basochhu hydropower plants.

The project was implemented under Subproject 1 of the 35 MWp Distributed Solar for Public Infrastructure Project, financed through an Asian Development Bank (ADB) loan.

DGPC Solar Portfolio Capacity Crosses 31 MWp

With the completion and handover of the rooftop solar installations, DGPC’s solar PV portfolio capacity has increased from 23 MWp, including the Sephu Solar Power Plant, to slightly over 31 MWp.

The successful completion of Subproject 1 also marks the transition of the rooftop solar systems from the construction phase to operational management.

Key Highlights of DSPIP Subproject 1

  • Installed Capacity: 7.83 MWp
  • Infrastructure Covered: 185 public infrastructure sites
  • Project Locations: Thimphu Thromde, Chhukha and Basochhu hydropower facilities
  • Project: Distributed Solar for Public Infrastructure Project (DSPIP)
  • Total Project Capacity: 35 MWp
  • Financing: Asian Development Bank (ADB) loan
  • Status: Subproject 1 completed and handed over for operation and maintenance

DSPIP Subproject 2 Tender Expected Soon

DGPC has indicated that the bidding process for Subproject 2 of the Distributed Solar for Public Infrastructure Project is expected to be initiated shortly.

The next phase is expected to further support the development of distributed solar installations across public infrastructure in Bhutan. However, the company has not announced the tender issuance date or detailed procurement schedule.

DGPC Advances 120 MWp Jamjee and Wobthang Solar Projects

Alongside its distributed solar initiatives, DGPC is progressing with larger solar developments across Bhutan.

The company is currently implementing the 120 MWp Jamjee solar project. Additionally, under ADB financing, DGPC is expected to award the contract for the 120 MWp Wobthang solar project in Bumthang Dzongkhag soon.

Several other solar projects are also at advanced stages of preparation and are expected to move towards implementation.

Bhutan Targets 25,000 MW Renewable Energy Capacity by 2040

DGPC’s solar development initiatives form part of Bhutan’s broader ambition to develop 25,000 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2040.

The company is expanding its solar portfolio through rooftop installations, utility-scale projects and other developments aimed at diversifying the country’s renewable energy resources.

During the handover, DGPC’s Managing Director congratulated the solar project team and emphasised the importance of smooth transitions from construction to operation, along with proper coordination with Bhutan Power Corporation for energy transactions.

The completion of DSPIP Subproject 1 represents another step in Bhutan’s efforts to expand solar generation and strengthen its sustainable energy infrastructure.
