Dürr AG has introduced EcoNextJet, a new high-resolution application system that can print intricate graphics, patterns, and text right onto the surfaces of cars. The system can print in two colors when needed and works both horizontally and vertically. EcoNextJet replaces traditional films and manual steps with a fully automated workflow by integrating custom designs directly into the painting process. This saves time and money.
Transforming Vehicle Personalization
Vehicle personalization continues to grow, but traditional methods relied on manually applying multi-layered films, which were difficult to recycle, had noticeable edges, and limited adhesion. EcoNextJet automates this labor-intensive process, allowing creative designs to be produced on a serial scale.
Timo Beyl, Manager New Technologies at Dürr, said: “The lines printed by EcoNextJet are as fine as a human hair. Regardless of the geometry or alignment of the body, detailed designs with high surface quality are possible in almost any location. Once the graphic has been clear coated, you can’t feel it anymore.”
Drop-on-Demand Technology
EcoNextJet is based on drop-on-demand technology, using a printhead with 2,000 individually controllable nozzles mounted on a painting robot. Key features include:
- Each nozzle dispenses paint only where required, up to six drops per pixel
- Drops merge in mid-air to form precise coverage
- Creates paper-thin images (~5 micrometers thick)
- Resolution up to 720 dpi
- Two-channel printhead allows two colors simultaneously
- Software calculates exact drop placement even on convex or vertical surfaces
- Same paint is used across all surfaces for consistent finish
This enables manufacturers to produce highly precise graphics, reducing waste and improving efficiency.
Collaborative Innovation
EcoNextJet was developed in partnership with industry leaders:
- Dürr – Process integration, robotics, and software
- Axalta – Paint formulation
- XAAR – Printhead technology
Frank Herre, Director Automotive (Paint Shop) at Dürr, said: “Our customers want their designers to have more freedom, especially for high-resolution graphics. Partnerships with Axalta and XAAR shortened development time and enabled a complete system meeting automotive standards.”
Ready for Testing
EcoNextJet is now available for testing at Dürr’s centers in Bietigheim, Germany, and Southfield, Michigan, USA. Manufacturers can see how automated, high-resolution graphics are produced without films, saving labor, reducing waste, and enabling new design possibilities.
EcoNextJet represents a major step toward more efficient, sustainable, and creative vehicle production.
