Electreon and Electra Afikim launch second wireless charging project at Ovnat Petach Tikva terminal

Electreon and Electra Afikim launch second wireless charging project at Ovnat Petach Tikva terminal

On April 27, 2025, Electreon, a global leader in wireless electric vehicle charging, announced a second major project agreement with Electra Afikim, one of Israel’s largest public transportation operators. Following the successful deployment of Electreon’s wireless charging technology at the Rosh HaAyin bus depot in November 2023, the new agreement involves plans to implement the technology at the Ovnat terminal in Petah Tikva, a key suburb of Tel Aviv. While the current agreement is limited to the planning phase, it signals a shared intention to proceed with full implementation, pending budgetary approval.

This renewed collaboration follows a year and a half of intense daily operation at the Rosh HaAyin depot, where 23 buses equipped with Electreon’s wireless charging technology are charged both overnight and during the day while parked. Impressed by the system’s performance and operational impact, Electra Afikim is expanding its use of Electreon’s solution.

Oren Ezer, CEO of Electreon, said “A returning customer is the best proof of the immediate value of Electreon’s wireless charging solution. We thank Electra Afikim for their continued trust, and I believe that the advantages of wireless technology—increased driving range, cost savings, and the ease and convenience of charging—will drive further expansion of our activities both in Israel and internationally.”

At the Ovnat bus terminal, Electreon’s wireless charging system will be embedded underground beneath the passenger bays, enabling automatic charging as buses pick up and drop off passengers. This opportunity-based charging model taps into short, frequent stops throughout the day to deliver multiple energy bursts. This approach reduces electricity costs, significantly extends daily driving range, and supports long-term battery health. By maximizing vehicle uptime and minimizing the need for extended charging sessions and for oversized batteries, the system gives Electreon a distinct competitive advantage. Located just seven miles from the original site, the Ovnat terminal sits directly across from the Grand Mall and next to the city’s light rail station, making it a key hub in the urban transport network. The project includes the design works and approvals needed to electrify the terminal and pending the approval of the Ministry of Transport will continue to the full construction of the local power grid, wireless charging installation and the operating and maintenance of the wireless system on site.

Afikim:

After more than a year of successful operation in Rosh HaAyin, during which Electreon proved that the implementation of wireless charging enables optimal utilization of the bus fleet—Afikim chose to expand the use of this technology to the Ovnat terminal as well. Choosing Electreon again is no coincidence—it’s a solution that has proven itself in the field, both operationally and in terms of cost reduction and service improvement. This move aligns with Afikim’s vision to fully electrify its fleet and to carry out this transition in a responsible, smart, and data-driven manner.

Electreon’s smart wireless charging system at the Ovnat terminal will power Electra Afikim’s fleet of wireless-enabled electric buses operating as part of the Rosh HaAyin bus line cluster which serves the city and its surrounding areas. Wireless charging embedded beneath the passenger bays will enable automatic charging as buses arrive—during boarding, drop-off, and scheduled breaks. The system operates autonomously without any driver or staff involvement, delivering seamless, around-the-clock energy. It requires minimal space, is protected underground, and is both quiet and emission-free—making it ideal for urban areas near residential neighborhoods.

The project will initially support Electra Afikim’s existing fleet of 23 electric buses already equipped with Electreon’s technology from the Rosh HaAyin depot project. Additionally, Electra Afikim plans to expand its fleet adding more electric buses. Looking ahead, this project aligns with Electra Afikim’s vision to fully electrify its fleet.  Electreon’s system, designed for scalability, can be extended along bus routes in the future,  to enable dynamic, in-motion charging— boosting range, minimizing downtime, and reducing dependence on large, costly batteries.

The project is backed by the Israeli government, with Electra Afikim supplying the buses. Electreon will deliver the wireless charging solution as a turnkey provider and will oversee the entire project—from system design and installation to electrical infrastructure, roadworks, and long-term operation and maintenance. It will additionally provide continuous service and access to its proprietary software platform. This tool monitors and analyzes key fleet data—such as driving speed, vehicle count, and operational metrics—enabling smart decision-making, efficient fleet management, and cost-optimized charging through prioritization during off-peak hours.
