Himadri Speciality Chemical Ltd. backed Sicona Battery Technologies has secured funding support of up to AUD 45 million from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to accelerate the commercialisation of its next-generation silicon-carbon anode technology. The funding will help the Australia-based battery materials company scale its proprietary technology and establish a commercial demonstration facility aimed at supporting high-performance lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage applications.
The funding, awarded under ARENA’s Battery Breakthrough Initiative, will support the construction and operation of a commercial-scale demonstration facility at BlueScope Steel’s Port Kembla precinct in New South Wales, Australia. The facility will manufacture Sicona’s proprietary SiCx® silicon-carbon anode material, designed to enhance battery performance for electric vehicles and energy storage applications.
The development is expected to strengthen Sicona’s commercialisation roadmap while reinforcing Himadri’s strategic focus on building a global presence in advanced battery materials. Himadri had invested in Sicona as part of its long-term strategy to expand its footprint across the clean energy and battery value chain, complementing its ongoing investments in lithium-ion battery materials and specialty carbon solutions.
According to ARENA, Sicona’s technology has demonstrated the potential to increase lithium-ion battery energy density by up to 20% while enabling charging speeds of up to 40% faster than conventional graphite anodes. Importantly, the material has been developed to integrate seamlessly into existing lithium-ion battery manufacturing infrastructure, reducing the need for major production changes.
The demonstration plant is expected to validate Sicona’s proprietary manufacturing process at commercial scale and produce qualification samples for global battery manufacturers and electric vehicle OEMs, paving the way for future offtake agreements and large-scale deployment.
The latest funding further highlights the increasing global focus on strengthening domestic battery supply chains and accelerating innovation in critical battery materials as demand for electric vehicles continues to rise. For Himadri, the milestone reinforces the strategic value of its investment in emerging battery technologies and aligns with the company’s broader vision of becoming a global player in advanced materials supporting the clean energy transition.
Industry observers view silicon-carbon anodes as one of the most promising advancements in lithium-ion battery technology, offering higher energy density and faster charging capabilities without significant changes to existing manufacturing ecosystems. As battery manufacturers worldwide look to improve vehicle range, charging efficiency and overall battery performance, technologies such as Sicona’s are expected to play an increasingly important role in the evolution of next-generation electric mobility.
