L&T Energy CarbonLite Solutions has received a Limited Notice to Proceed (LNTP) from NTPC Ltd for the main plant package of the 1,600 MW (2×800 MW) Lara Stage-III thermal power project in Chhattisgarh. The formal Notice to Proceed will be issued after the project obtains environmental clearance and the LNTP period concludes.
The project involves the construction of two 800 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power generating units designed to improve efficiency while reducing specific emissions compared to conventional coal-fired plants. Once operational, the plant will contribute 1,600 MW of reliable baseload power to India’s electricity grid, supporting rising power demand driven by industrialisation, urbanisation and infrastructure development.
Under the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract, L&T will undertake the design, engineering, manufacturing, supply, erection, testing and commissioning of key equipment, including boilers, steam turbines, generators, electrostatic precipitators (ESPs), air-cooled condensers (ACCs) and associated auxiliary systems. The scope also covers mechanical, electrical, control and instrumentation, and civil works.
According to the company, the project will be executed using ultra-supercritical technology, which delivers higher thermal efficiency and lower emissions than subcritical thermal power plants, aligning with efforts to improve the environmental performance of conventional power generation.
Commenting on the development, T. Madhava Das, Whole-time Director, Senior Executive Vice President and Head of L&T’s Energy Hydrocarbon Division, said the award marks the company’s third ultra-supercritical thermal power project from NTPC in the past two years. He added that the order reflects NTPC’s continued confidence in L&T’s engineering, manufacturing and project execution capabilities, and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to delivering the project with high standards of quality, safety and operational excellence.
L&T has classified the NTPC Lara Stage-III contract as a “Mega” order, indicating an estimated value between ₹10,000 crore and ₹15,000 crore, as per the company’s order classification. The project further strengthens L&T’s order book in the thermal power EPC segment while supporting NTPC’s ongoing capacity expansion plans.
