MeECL and TERI Sign MoU to Advance Renewable Energy and Storage in Meghalaya

Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) have signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen Meghalaya’s renewable energy sector, assess energy storage requirements, and improve grid flexibility. The partnership will also focus on renewable energy planning, resource adequacy studies, energy efficiency, and capacity building for power distribution officials. The MoU was signed at the MeECL Headquarters in Shillong in the presence of senior representatives from the Government of Meghalaya, MeECL and TERI.

In his welcome address, Shri Sanjay Goyal, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary, Power Department, Government of Meghalaya, and CMD, MeECL, said, “By aligning national and state-level incentives, distributed renewable energy coupled with storage can become a game changer for the North-Eastern states, especially where power supply costs are high.”

The partnership will bring together TERI’s research and technical expertise and the capabilities of MeECL and its subsidiaries, Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Ltd (MePDCL), Meghalaya Power Transmission Corporation Ltd (MePTCL), and Meghalaya Power Generation Corporation Ltd (MePGCL), to support an integrated, reliable and future-ready electricity system for Meghalaya.

Alekhya Datta, Director, Electricity & Renewables Division, TERI, highlighted, “Alongside financial incentives, DISCOM officials need continuous training and hands-on support to effectively manage and accelerate the integration of emerging distributed renewable energy solutions.”

Under the MoU, the organisations will explore collaboration in renewable energy. The partnership will also assess the state’s current and future flexibility requirements and identify the energy storage technologies best suited to provide the necessary flexibility support.

Other areas of cooperation include integrated demand and supply projections and resource adequacy studies; renewable energy capacity addition planning for Meghalaya; capacity-building initiatives for DISCOM officials and other relevant stakeholders; and energy efficiency and demand-side management.

The MoU was signed by Smti. I Majaw (MCS), Director, Corporate Affairs, MeECL, on behalf of MeECL and its subsidiaries, and Mr Alekhya Datta, Director, Electricity & Renewables Division, TERI, on behalf of TERI. The MoU will be valid for a period of three years from the date of its execution, with the possibility of extension through mutual written consent.

The signing marks an important step towards enabling knowledge exchange, technical collaboration and capacity building in areas that can contribute to Meghalaya’s renewable energy development and broader energy transition. The ceremony concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr Ashish Kumar Sharma, Fellow, TERI.
