NavPrakriti, a lithium-ion battery recycling and refurbishment firm, has announced plans to invest over ₹100 crore to establish a state-of-the-art critical minerals recycling facility in Odisha, marking a major step in strengthening India’s domestic supply chain and circular economy.
The new Odisha recycling facility by Navprakriti is expected to be up and running by FY 2028–29 and will focus on getting important battery materials like lithium, cobalt, and nickel. The plant will be able to process up to 5,000 metric tonnes of batteries at the end of their life each year. This will allow for the recovery of important minerals with high purity and less reliance on imports.
Strengthening India’s Critical Minerals Ecosystem
NavPrakriti has recently been deemed eligible under the National Critical Mineral Mission, supporting its efforts to scale mineral extraction and recycling capabilities.
- Focus on cobalt, nickel, lithium extractiona
- Contribution to domestic supply chain resilience
- Boost to India’s battery recycling ecosystem
This project fits with India’s goal of becoming more self-sufficient in important minerals and making the switch to clean energy.
Expansion Plans and Operational Footprint
The Odisha plant will be the company’s second major facility, following its operational unit in Serampore, West Bengal, which currently has:
- 12,000 tons annual capacity, scalable to 24,000 tons
- Position as eastern India’s large-scale lithium-ion recycaling plant
NavPrakriti is also working with top research institutions to improve chemical recovery and battery refurbishment technologies.
Leadership Perspective and Growth Vision
Co-founder Akhilesh Bagaria stated, “the planned ₹100 crore investment goes beyond scale, setting a new benchmark for responsible battery recycling and advanced mineral recovery in India.”
He also said that the project would create more than 500 direct and indirect jobs, which would be very good for the economy and society.
Co-founder Avnish Bagaria highlighted future ambitions, stating, “with eligibility under the National Critical Mineral Mission, NavPrakriti is accelerating its ambitious goal of partnering with over 150 battery OEMs and leading manufacturers within the next three years.”
NavPrakriti wants to help build a circular battery economy by focusing on high-purity mineral recovery and expanding its infrastructure. This will help India reach its clean energy goals and lower its dependence on imported raw materials.
