NHPC Limited has initiated the wet commissioning of Unit-4 (250 MW) at the 2000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project on March 31, 2026, marking a significant milestone in India’s largest hydropower development. The commissioning process began with the successful mechanical run of the unit, signalling the start of the fourth unit’s operational phase.
Progress Toward India’s Largest Hydropower Project
The Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project is India’s most important renewable energy project. It has a total capacity of 2000 MW (8 × 250 MW). NHPC is one step closer to finishing this huge project now that Unit-4 is being wet-commissioned. The development shows that the country is still committed to increasing its capacity for clean, renewable energy and making the grid more stable.
Leadership Applauds Engineering Milestone
On the occasion, Shri Bhupender Gupta, CMD, NHPC, expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Power, Government of India, the Governments of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, former NHPC leadership, project teams, executing agencies, and all stakeholders involved.
He stated, “This achievement is a testament to NHPC’s engineering excellence and a powerful step toward India’s clean, green and self-reliant energy vision.”
He also acknowledged the efforts of the Subansiri project team led by Shri Rajendra Prasad, Executive Director & Head of Project, and encouraged continued dedication to ensure the timely commissioning of the remaining units.
Synchronization and Future Commissioning Plans
The process of connecting Unit-4 to the National Grid has also begun with the start of wet commissioning. This is an important step toward getting the unit up and running for business. NHPC plans to put the last four units of 250 MW each into service in stages.
Once fully operational, the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project will stand as India’s largest hydroelectric facility, playing a vital role in meeting rising power demand while supporting the country’s transition toward cleaner energy sources.
