Tata Power has launched the Energy Insights & Innovation Lab (EIIL) at its headquarters in Mumbai, introducing a first-of-its-kind initiative that embeds global academic research directly into on-ground utility operations. The Lab has been established to address real-world challenges facing India’s power system by applying data-driven insights and advanced analytical tools to electricity planning and operations.
The launch of EIIL marks a substantive step forward in India–UK collaboration in the energy sector. The initiative brings together Tata Power, the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and the International Growth Centre (IGC). Through this partnership, the Lab will apply data analytics, behavioural science, and system-level energy modelling to improve decision-making in electricity systems, with a focus on operational efficiency, reliability, and affordability.
The Energy Insights & Innovation Lab was inaugurated by Dr. Praveer Sinha, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Tata Power, alongside Prof. Robin Burgess of LSE and IGC, and Dr. Jonathan Leape, Executive Director of IGC. The inauguration ceremony was attended by HM Harjinder Kang, Trade Commissioner for South Asia and British Deputy High Commissioner for Western India, and Dr. Chetan Ghate, Professor at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) and IGC ISGH, underscoring the importance of the initiative for bilateral cooperation.
EIIL will focus on addressing several critical challenges within India’s power sector, including peak demand management, service quality and reliability, and the integration of renewable energy into the grid, while ensuring that electricity remains affordable for consumers. By conducting real-world testing of interventions with customers, the Lab aims to generate robust evidence that can support operational strategies and tariff-related decisions.
As a UK–India partnership, EIIL combines the academic research capabilities of LSE and IGC with Tata Power’s large operational footprint and diverse customer base. This collaboration is intended to develop practical solutions that can be tested in real operating environments, refined through evidence-based learning, and scaled across the power sector.
The insights generated through the Lab are expected to support not only Tata Power’s operations but also inform utilities and regulators in India and other emerging economies, contributing to more resilient, efficient, and sustainable electricity systems.
