Telangana Government to Procure 3,000 MW Solar Power Over Five Years

The Telangana State Government has approved the procurement of 3,000 MW of solar power over the next five years through competitive bidding. This step will help meet the Renewable Power Consumption Obligation (RCO) and achieve the goals of the Telangana Clean and Green Energy Policy.

In orders issued on Saturday, November 29, the Telangana Power Planning and Coordination Committee (TGPPCC) identified a shortfall in the RPO/RCO and estimated that an additional 12,000 MW of renewable energy capacity would be needed by 2030. The Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation had proposed initiating the procurement of 5,000 MW of solar power through competitive bidding, in coordination with the Discoms.

After reviewing the proposal, the state government approved the phased procurement of 3,000 MW of solar power over five years through competitive bidding to meet the RCO. The planned procurement schedule includes 1,000 MW each by June 2026, December 2026, and June 2027.

Underground Cabling Initiative

In another major development, the state government has approved the conversion of overhead power transmission and distribution lines to an underground cabling network in the Metro Zone, which includes Banjara Hills, Secunderabad, Hyderabad Central, and Hyderabad South circles, at a total cost of ₹4,051 crore.

According to the official order, the proposed underground cabling plan includes:

  • 180 km of exclusive 33 kV lines
  • 2,396 km of exclusive 11 kV lines (both using horizontal directional drilling)
  • 73 km of combined 33 kV and 11 kV lines
  • 24 km of combined 33 kV, 11 kV, and low-tension (LT) lines
  • 1,407 km of combined 11 kV and LT lines
  • 10 km of combined 33 kV and LT lines
  • 825 km of main roads LT overhead lines
  • 6,251 km of LT overhead to LT air-break (AB) lines
  • 14,051 ring main units (RMUs)
  • 3,899 km of optical fiber cable (OFC)

This initiative aims to modernize and strengthen the power distribution network across Hyderabad’s Metro Zone.
