World EV Day: IESA, Industry Leaders Push India to Accelerate EV Adoption

IESA, Industry Leaders Push India to Accelerate EV Adoption

India’s electric mobility sector is gathering unprecedented momentum, with July 2026 recording all-time high EV sales of 3,27,901 units, a 66% jump over the previous year. According to FADA, nearly one in every eight vehicles sold last month was electric. With over 24.5 lakh EVs sold in FY2026 and public charging stations surpassing 27,000 nationwide, India’s EV transformation is well underway, powered by both consumer demand and supportive policies. To sustain India’s rapid EV adoption and unlock its next phase of growth, industry leaders on World EV Day called for greater government focus on smart-grid infrastructure and expanded battery incentives—critical enablers for building a resilient, scalable and future-ready EV ecosystem.

Vinayak Walimbe, Managing Director, India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA), said, “As India’s EV ecosystem evolves, we have a tremendous opportunity to build a self-reliant and globally competitive battery supply chain. The proposed incentive scheme for domestic battery components is a visionary step towards nurturing upstream capabilities like cathode, anode, and separator manufacturing. The government must accelerate this momentum by supporting R&D collaboration, strategic mineral development, and workforce skill-building.”

While battery manufacturing incentives are vital, sector experts underline that success will ultimately depend on building a smart, future-ready grid capable of supporting mass electrification. Seamless integration of advanced batteries will require significant upgrades to India’s digital energy infrastructure.

Kumar M, Founder & CEO, Smart Grid Analytics, said, “As India accelerates its energy transition, it’s vital that our grid evolves alongside our ambitions, especially as electric vehicles become central to our decarbonisation strategy. The next frontier is not just renewable power generation, but a digital, AI-driven grid that can seamlessly integrate solar, wind, storage, and EVs at scale. We urge the government to prioritise investments in digital infrastructure, automation, and real-time intelligence to ensure grid stability and unlock commercial returns. With the right focus, India can leapfrog legacy challenges and build a resilient, data-driven grid that empowers consumers and sets a new global benchmark for the energy transition.”

India’s EV surge is also being propelled by grassroots innovation and entrepreneurial drive in the last-mile and fleet segments. Last-mile delivery operators, logistics startups, and fleet entrepreneurs are now central to mainstreaming electric mobility across Indian cities.

Sandeep Mukherjee, CEO, BLive, said, “To truly accelerate EV adoption in India, we must recognise that the real change-makers are our riders and fleet operators driving last-mile delivery across cities. Their shift to electric is transforming urban transport, lowering emissions, and making mobility smarter and more sustainable. We call on the government to push policies that empower these entrepreneurs and promote innovative ownership and fleet models. By supporting those at the frontlines, we can drive inclusive, scalable growth and electrify India’s mobility future.”

With EV adoption rising, the industry is also turning its attention to battery material security and the need for a robust circular economy. Leaders are pressing for policy action to scale up recycling and resource management, ensuring self-reliance in critical minerals.

Akhilesh Bagaria, Co-Founder, NavPrakriti, said, “As India’s demand for lithium-ion batteries skyrockets with the growth of electric vehicles and renewable energy, closing the loop on battery materials is essential to safeguard our critical mineral supply. Recycling and refurbishing end-of-life batteries must become central pillars of India’s e-mobility strategy, reducing dependence on imports and minimising environmental impact. Our recommendation to the government is to strengthen policies and incentives for battery recycling and second-life applications, ensuring that every spent battery becomes a resource for new growth.”

Bharath Krishna Rao – CEO & Co-founder, Emobi, said, “EV Day is a timely reminder that the shift to electric mobility is not only about adopting a cleaner technology, but about making sustainable transportation practical and accessible for everyday use. With India recording increasingly high numbers of EV registrations and emerging as one of the world’s largest electric two wheeler markets, consumer acceptance is steadily gaining momentum. The next phase will depend on making electric mobility more practical, affordable, and scalable by improving the charging and battery infrastructure, by implementing efficient energy management, and by coming up with solutions based on real world usage. As the ecosystem continues to expand, the industry must ensure that affordability, convenience and sustainability move together. The success of India’s electric mobility journey will ultimately be measured by how effectively it can reduce the cost of motoring while delivering cleaner and more efficient transportation for consumers and businesses.”

Arun Bhardwaj, Managing Director, Smarten Power Systems, said, “World EV Day is a good time to look at electrification as more than a shift from one type of vehicle to another. It is also about building the energy infrastructure needed to make electric mobility work reliably in everyday life. An electric vehicle can only be as practical as the system that supports it, which makes reliable charging, efficient power use and adequate energy infrastructure increasingly important. For India, the next phase of EV adoption will require us to think about generation, charging, storage and consumption as parts of the same equation. The conversation also needs to move beyond how many EVs are being sold to whether the infrastructure around them can keep pace with everyday demand. If we get that right, particularly by making better use of renewable energy and managing demand more efficiently, electric mobility can become more than a cleaner way to travel. It can also help us build a smarter and more resilient energy system.”

Divyanshu Agarwal, CEO, Zelio E-Mobility, said, “World EV Day is a reminder that India’s EV transition will not be defined by a single segment or a handful of metro markets. Much of the next wave of adoption is being driven by Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, where electric two-wheelers address everyday mobility needs in a practical, accessible, and affordable way. Madhumita Agrawal, Founder & CEO of Oben Electric, said “India’s EV journey is entering a new phase, the conversation is shifting from adoption to mainstream acceptance. With EV registrations crossing 25 lakh in FY2025-26, the momentum is clear, with electric two-wheelers emerging as one of the strongest drivers of this transition.

The next opportunity lies in electric motorcycles. Two-wheelers are at the heart of everyday mobility in India, and as consumers increasingly look at EVs not as an alternative but as their primary mode of transport, electric motorcycles can play a defining role in taking electrification deeper into the mass market.

For this shift to scale, the industry must continue to focus on the accessible pricing, dependable products, convenient charging, strong after-sales support and a robust domestic EV ecosystem. Continued policy support, alongside investments in technology and manufacturing, will further strengthen this transition.

World EV Day is a reminder that the future of mobility is not just about making vehicles electric; it is about making electric mobility practical, aspirational and accessible to millions of Indians. The next chapter of India’s EV story will be about making that transition truly mainstream.”

Industry veterans from regulatory bodies, intelligent grids, battery storage, battery supply chains, and fleet innovation on World EV Day have highlighted the urgency for India to move from momentum to acceleration on its electric mobility journey. With affordability unlocking mass adoption and record sales setting new benchmarks, industry leaders are pushing for coordinated government action across smart grids, battery supply chains, and fleet innovation to secure India’s leadership in the global EV transition.
