Alight, a leading Nordic solar developer and independent power producer (IPP), has acquired a solar and BESS project under development in Denmark from GreenGo Energy. The project, located in Kalundborg on Sjælland, marks Alight’s first integrated solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) project in the country and a significant addition to its growing Nordic pipeline.
The 79 MWp utility-scale solar park and the 55 MW BESS are both part of the same hybrid project by Alight. The facility will cover about 90 hectares and make about 95 GWh of electricity each year. This will help Denmark’s ability to use renewable energy.
Hybrid Design Enhances Energy Value and Flexibility
A key feature of the project is its co-located solar and storage configuration, which operates behind a single grid connection. This setup enables time-shifting of energy, allowing electricity generated during peak solar hours to be stored and dispatched when demand is higher. The integration enhances both the flexibility and overall value of the project’s output.
Alight said that the Kalundborg project stands out among the 7 GW of projects it has looked at in Denmark because it has a high potential for return. High solar irradiation, a well-planned project, and good land and grid conditions all support this.
Joint Development with GreenGo Energy
The project is still in its early stages of development. Land lease agreements have been signed, and the zoning and environmental permitting processes are now in progress. Alight and GreenGo Energy will keep working on the project together until it is ready to be built, which is expected to happen by 2028.
Commenting on the development, Warren Campbell, CEO at Alight, said, “We’re excited to add a solid project to our development pipeline and expand our Danish portfolio. This hybrid park is a fully integrated solar-plus-storage project in one of the most strategic locations in Denmark. By combining solar with BESS in DK2, we can generate renewable power where and when it is most needed.”
Karsten Nielsen, CEO at GreenGo Energy, added, “We are very pleased to partner with Alight on this first project together in Denmark. GreenGo will continue as development partner through ready-to-build, and we see Kalundborg as a strong first step in supporting Alight’s ambitious vision in the Nordics.”
Supporting Long-Term Growth Strategy
The project will be structured around long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs), under which Alight will own and operate the asset and supply electricity to commercial and industrial customers at fixed prices.
This purchase fits in with Alight’s larger plan to grow its renewable energy footprint in the Nordics, with projects already underway in Finland and Sweden. The company wants to have at least 5 GW of installed capacity by 2030. In 2025, the company bought a 215 MWp solar park in Lolland, Denmark, from European Energy. This park is now up and running and is one of the biggest solar installations in the area.
