CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with European energy storage provider INTILION to supply 3 GWh of its TENER energy storage systems over the next five years. The agreement will support grid-scale and commercial energy storage projects across Germany, Switzerland and Austria, strengthening the companies’ presence in the European energy storage market.
Under the agreement, CATL’s TENER systems will be deployed in projects designed to support grid stability, improve power reliability and strengthen regional energy security. The partnership aims to meet the growing demand for energy storage solutions as European markets expand renewable energy integration and seek greater flexibility in electricity supply.
CATL TENER Designed for Harsh Winter Conditions
CATL’s TENER energy storage system is designed to operate in demanding environmental conditions, including the harsh winters experienced across parts of Europe. According to the company, the system delivers more than 15,000 charge cycles over a 25-year operational lifespan while maintaining high power discharge performance at temperatures as low as -20°C.
These capabilities are intended to support reliable energy storage operations in regions where low temperatures can affect battery performance. By helping store and dispatch electricity when required, the systems can contribute to grid balancing and improve the integration of renewable energy sources.
Grid-scale battery storage is becoming increasingly important as Germany, Switzerland and Austria continue to expand renewable power generation. Energy storage systems can help manage fluctuations in electricity supply, particularly from solar and wind power, while supporting the stability of electricity networks.
Partnership Builds on Existing European Projects
The agreement builds on the existing cooperation between CATL and INTILION. The companies have been associated with more than 30 successful projects in Germany since 2022 and plan to expand their collaboration across European markets.
The five-year supply arrangement is expected to broaden access to CATL’s energy storage technologies for utility-scale and commercial applications. The partnership will also extend beyond lithium-ion batteries to include sodium-ion technology, supporting the companies’ efforts to bring different battery chemistries to the European market.
The inclusion of lithium-ion and sodium-ion technologies reflects the broader development of the energy storage sector, where different battery chemistries can serve varying project requirements, operating conditions and cost considerations.
Strengthening Europe’s Energy Storage Capacity
The planned supply of 3 GWh of energy storage systems represents a significant step in the companies’ efforts to expand their presence in Europe. By combining CATL’s battery technology with INTILION’s regional market presence, the partnership aims to support the deployment of storage solutions for grid-scale and commercial energy projects.
As renewable energy capacity increases across Europe, battery energy storage systems are expected to play a greater role in balancing electricity supply and demand. The CATL–INTILION agreement adds to efforts to develop storage infrastructure capable of supporting reliable power delivery and a more flexible electricity system.
