Hitachi Energy Wins First-Ever 165 MW/330 MWh BESS Project in India

Hitachi Energy has secured its first Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in India with a 165 MW/330 MWh installation in Andhra Pradesh, marking the company’s formal entry into the country’s rapidly expanding energy storage market.

The project represents a significant milestone for Hitachi Energy as India accelerates the deployment of battery storage systems to support renewable energy integration and strengthen grid reliability. The company said the order reinforces its capabilities in grid integration, power quality solutions, and advanced energy technologies, positioning it to play a larger role in the country’s clean energy transition.

According to Hitachi Energy, the project reflects growing confidence among customers in the company’s engineering expertise and project execution capabilities. The battery energy storage system is expected to enhance grid flexibility, improve power quality and support the reliable integration of renewable energy into the electricity network.

Ramkumar D, Senior Vice President, Hitachi Energy India, described the order as an important step in the company’s growth strategy. He said the project demonstrates customer trust in Hitachi Energy’s ability to deliver advanced grid solutions while contributing to the expansion of renewable energy infrastructure in India.

He added that the project strengthens the company’s position in India’s evolving energy storage sector and creates opportunities to support the country’s decarbonisation efforts through innovative energy technologies.

“This milestone positions us strongly to capture emerging opportunities in India’s rapidly evolving energy landscape while contributing meaningfully to our sustainability and decarbonisation goals,” Ramkumar D said.

Battery Energy Storage Systems are becoming an essential part of modern electricity networks, enabling utilities and grid operators to store surplus renewable energy and dispatch it during periods of peak demand. As India increases the share of solar and wind power in its energy mix, grid-scale storage projects are expected to play a crucial role in maintaining grid stability, operational flexibility and power system reliability.

The Andhra Pradesh project comes amid growing momentum in India’s BESS market, driven by supportive government policies, large-scale renewable energy additions and increasing demand for flexible grid infrastructure.

The latest order also aligns with Hitachi Energy’s broader investment strategy in India. Earlier this month, the company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Tamil Nadu to invest ₹1,000 crore over the next three to five years. The investment will be used to expand the company’s technology capabilities and manufacturing operations in the state.

In addition, Hitachi Energy recently announced plans to invest approximately ₹2,000 crore to establish a new large power transformer manufacturing facility at Karjan in Vadodara, Gujarat. The facility is expected to be commissioned by FY2027-28 and will strengthen the company’s manufacturing footprint while supporting the growing demand for power infrastructure in India and global markets.

With its first BESS project now secured, Hitachi Energy is set to expand its presence in India’s fast-growing energy storage segment, supporting the country’s clean energy ambitions and the development of a more resilient electricity grid.
