The Indian Army has successfully commissioned a 10 kW solar power plant in Muguthang village in North Sikkim, bringing round-the-year electricity to one of India’s highest and most remote border settlements near the India-China frontier. The project was executed under the aegis of the Army’s Trishakti Corps and marks a significant step in improving infrastructure and living conditions in a strategically sensitive high-altitude region.
Located at an altitude of approximately 15,000 feet, Muguthang is home to 10 families with a population of 32 residents. Until now, villagers relied on small, individual solar panels that provided limited and unreliable power, especially during the harsh winter months. The absence of dependable electricity forced residents to migrate for nearly five to six months every year, leaving behind their homes and livestock.
With the commissioning of the centralized solar power plant, Muguthang now has access to reliable, continuous electricity, enabling year-round habitation. The new facility is expected to significantly improve night-time safety, communication, connectivity, and overall quality of life, while eliminating the need for seasonal migration.
The initiative aligns with the Government of India’s Vibrant Villages Programme, which focuses on strengthening infrastructure, livelihood opportunities, and connectivity in border villages to prevent depopulation and promote sustainable development in remote areas. Army officials stated that the solar solution was selected after close consultation with local residents, taking into account the extreme weather conditions and difficult terrain.
Speaking on the occasion, an Indian Army officer said, “Providing essential facilities in remote border areas is vital for national resilience. This solar power project will help the people of Muguthang live safely and with dignity throughout the year.”
The project highlights the Indian Army’s dual role in national security and community development, while also showcasing the growing importance of renewable energy solutions in supporting civilian populations in high-altitude and border regions. By ensuring reliable power access, the initiative strengthens civil–military cooperation and contributes to building resilient and self-sustaining border communities.
