Larsen & Toubro (L&T), in consortium with Hitachi Energy, has successfully concluded a Framework Cooperation Agreement (FCA) with Dutch-German transmission system operator TenneT, covering projects under its ambitious offshore wind transmission programme.
The framework agreement, which covers six projects in principle along with potential future opportunities, is aimed at supporting the large-scale integration of offshore renewable energy into Europe’s power grids and accelerating the region’s transition towards a sustainable and decarbonised energy system.
As part of the programme, the L&T-Hitachi Energy consortium will continue the execution of two ongoing projects in the Netherlands — IJmuiden Ver Alpha and Nederwiek 1. The consortium will also commence work on two additional projects, Nederwiek 3 in the Netherlands and LanWin 5 in Germany.
Together, these projects represent a cumulative transmission capacity of 8 GW and will operate at a voltage level of 525 kV. The transmission infrastructure is designed to transport renewable electricity generated from offshore wind farms in the Dutch and German sectors of the North Sea to onshore electricity grids.
The programme is expected to play an important role in supporting Europe’s growing offshore wind capacity and strengthening the region’s power transmission infrastructure. With the expansion of offshore renewable generation, high-capacity transmission systems are becoming increasingly important for moving clean electricity from generation hubs at sea to demand centres on land.
Under the engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) scope, L&T will be responsible for executing offshore converter platforms and associated infrastructure. Hitachi Energy will contribute its HVDC Light technology for high-voltage direct current power conversion and transmission.
The collaboration combines L&T’s capabilities in offshore engineering, infrastructure development and project execution with Hitachi Energy’s expertise in high-voltage power transmission technologies. The companies aim to deliver large-scale HVDC infrastructure capable of efficiently transmitting renewable electricity over long distances.
The partnership also highlights the growing importance of advanced grid infrastructure in Europe’s energy transition. HVDC technology can facilitate the efficient transmission of large volumes of electricity and help integrate variable renewable energy sources into interconnected power networks.
L&T said its Offshore Wind business is supported by multidisciplinary engineering capabilities through its engineering centre of excellence in India and Sharjah, UAE. The business is also backed by strategic global partnerships, an established supply chain ecosystem and modular fabrication facilities at Kattupalli, India.
These capabilities are expected to support the consortium in delivering complex offshore structures while meeting requirements related to safety, quality and sustainability.
The FCA further strengthens L&T’s international presence in the offshore renewable energy sector and expands its role in Europe’s clean energy infrastructure development. For the broader energy storage and battery industry, the development of high-capacity renewable power transmission networks could also support the future integration of large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) by improving grid flexibility and enabling better management of renewable power flows.
With offshore wind emerging as a key pillar of Europe’s decarbonisation strategy, the L&T-Hitachi Energy consortium’s participation in TenneT’s transmission programme marks another step towards building the infrastructure required for a net-zero energy system.
