NTPC Limited has announced the commercial operation of Unit IV of the Tehri Pumped Storage Project (PSP), marking a key milestone in India’s hydro and energy storage capacity expansion. The development was disclosed through a regulatory filing to BSE Limited and the National Stock Exchange of India on April 11, 2026.
Tehri PSP Unit IV Achieves Commercial Operation
The fourth unit of the Tehri PSP, with a capacity of 250 MW, has been declared commercially operational with effect from 00:00 hrs on April 12, 2026. The project is being developed by THDC India Limited, a subsidiary of NTPC.
NTPC Limited has announced that its subsidiary, THDC India Limited, has declared the commercial operation date (COD) of the fourth 250 MW unit of the Tehri Pumped Storage Plant (PSP), effective 00:00 hours on April 12, 2026, taking the NTPC group’s total installed capacity to 89,378 MW.
The unit was commissioned after receiving all necessary approvals, completing the 4 x 250 MW configuration of the pumped storage facility.
Capacity Expansion Across NTPC Group
With the commissioning of Unit IV, THDC India Limited’s total installed and commercial capacity has increased to 3,907 MW. The addition has also strengthened NTPC Group’s overall generation portfolio.
Following the commissioning, NTPC stated that its total installed capacity stands at 89,378 MW, while commercial capacity is 88,298 MW.
This expansion reinforces NTPC’s position as a leading power producer while supporting India’s growing electricity demand.
Enhancing Grid Stability and Peak Management
The Tehri PSP, which is in Uttarakhand, is very important for managing the grid because it can give power when demand is highest. As the amount of renewable energy grows, pumped storage projects become more and more important. They help to balance sources that come and go, like solar and wind.
The project contributes to improving grid reliability, enabling efficient energy storage and release, and ensuring stability across the power network.
Supporting India’s Energy Transition
The commissioning of the last unit of the Tehri PSP shows that NTPC Group is still working to increase its generation capacity and improve the energy infrastructure. It also shows how pumped storage projects are becoming more and more important for helping India move toward a power system that is more sustainable and resilient.
This development marks another step in enhancing the country’s hydroelectric and energy storage capabilities while meeting rising power demand.
