Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has invited bids for the development of a 187.5 MW/750 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Telangana under Package TS-BESS-01. The four-hour storage project is associated with the Maheswaram 400/220 kV substation operated by Telangana’s transmission utility, TGTRANSCO. The tender was published on 12 October 2026 under the tariff-based competitive bidding framework.
The project covers the design, supply, erection, testing and commissioning of the BESS, along with operation and maintenance. The facility is expected to be completed within 15 months from the employer handing over the site. The selected contractor will also be responsible for comprehensive maintenance for 15 years after commissioning.

Bidding Framework and Implementation
The project is being pursued through tariff-based competitive bidding with viability gap funding support through the Power System Development Fund (PSDF). Telangana Power Generation Corporation Limited (TGGENCO) is identified in the available reporting as the bid process coordinator responsible for the Request for Selection (RfS).
POWERGRID intends to pre-select a qualified bidder with the required technical capability and the lowest evaluated bid to partner in the tariff-bidding process. A memorandum of understanding is expected to be signed with the selected bidder before POWERGRID submits its tariff bid. The contract for project execution would follow if POWERGRID succeeds in the wider bidding process. Therefore, this tender should not be described as a direct award of the BESS project to a developer at this stage.
The storage installation is intended to support grid flexibility as renewable energy generation increases. Battery storage can absorb electricity when supply is available and discharge it during periods of higher demand or lower renewable generation.
