Austrian company Blackvolt Energy has started building a big battery in Salzburg.
It can deliver 18 MW of power and store 36 MWh of energy. This will be the first battery of its kind in the state that works on its own, without being tied to a power plant.
The battery energy storage system (BESS) will be located in the town of Oberndorf and is expected to become operational in the first quarter of 2027, the developer said. The facility will be designed to store excess electricity and feed it back into the grid when demand is high, managing fluctuations and balancing renewable energy generation.
The project will be financed with long-term senior secured debt extended by Raiffeisen-Landesbank Steiermark.
Vienna-based Blackvolt Energy plans to start work on several more BESS projects before year-end as it expands across Austria. Backed by energy infrastructure investor Clarence Capital Partners, the company has more than 300 MW of energy storage projects ready for construction and a development pipeline of over 1.2 GW.
