The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) has revised the tariff for a key inter-regional green power corridor following a recent relief order issued by the Appellate Tribunal for Electricity (APTEL) in favour of Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (Power Grid). The development is significant for India’s renewable energy transmission infrastructure, as it directly impacts the cost structure and financial framework of high-capacity green energy evacuation projects.
The case relates to a critical inter-regional transmission system designed to facilitate the transfer of renewable energy across different regions of the country. Such green power corridors are essential for integrating large volumes of solar and wind energy into the national grid, ensuring that power generated in resource-rich states can be efficiently transmitted to high-demand regions. However, disputes over tariff determination and cost recovery mechanisms had led to regulatory challenges, prompting intervention by APTEL.
Following the tribunal’s relief to Power Grid, which is responsible for executing and operating major interstate transmission networks in India, CERC has now revised the applicable tariff structure. The revised tariff is expected to provide greater clarity on cost recovery and improve financial viability for large-scale transmission projects under the green energy corridor framework.
Power Grid had earlier sought regulatory reconsideration on certain tariff-related aspects, arguing that the existing structure did not fully account for project costs and implementation challenges associated with complex inter-regional transmission infrastructure. APTEL’s order provided relief by addressing key concerns raised by the company, paving the way for CERC to reassess and update the tariff framework.
The revision is expected to have broader implications for India’s renewable energy sector. As the country accelerates its clean energy transition, the development of robust transmission infrastructure is critical to ensure reliable grid integration of renewable sources. Green energy corridors play a vital role in balancing supply and demand across regions, reducing congestion, and improving grid stability.
Industry experts view the tariff revision as a positive step toward strengthening investor confidence in transmission projects. A transparent and predictable tariff mechanism is considered essential for attracting long-term investments in the power transmission sector, particularly at a time when India is expanding its renewable energy capacity aggressively.
CERC’s decision also reinforces the importance of regulatory alignment between judicial or quasi-judicial bodies like APTEL and sector regulators. Such coordination ensures that project developers and utilities operate within a stable policy framework, reducing uncertainty in infrastructure development.
